Post New to Fly Fishing For Redfish
Hi All!
I have been lurking on this site for a while. I moved to SC from Oregon back in 2003. I really miss the salmon, steelhead and trout fishing but have been too busy since the move, lack of fishing buddies, etc, etc. to get n=back into it in South Carolina. ( I have lots of excuses) Anyway, this site has piqued my interest in kayak fishing. I purchased a Wilderness Tsunami 125 sit in before I had been "enlightened" about sit on tops and have been making PVC rod holders, basket, GPS mount and such. I have been shrimping at Hunting Island which looks promising and the wife and I LOVE the Charleston area and go there fairly often. I have a number of questions that I am hoping someone can help me with.

I just purchased a used but in new condition Sage RPLXI 8# 9-1/2' for a very low price and need to get reel and line. I am looking at a Scientific Angler System 2LA or maybe an Okuma SLV. I've read good reviews about the Okuma and it's cheap. What fly line should I purchase? Should I get a high floating salt water hollow core (stiff) or a more supple solid core line? Anyone have a favorite?

I really want to try fishing for tailing fish which will be a new experience for me. I have looked on line for fly patterns without much success. I have tied up some chartreuse Clousers but that is about it. What else should I tie?

Any recommendations on location? I have heard Copahee Sound is good. I have a pop up camper and have reservations at Hunting Island next Memorial Day and am looking at James Island campground as well. There is so much area available it is hard to choose where to start. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I also have a Loomis 9# and Loomis GLX 7#. I have floating line for both and a really fast sinking line for the 9# as well.

Thanks in advance,

Tim

I work at the Charlestoin Angler in Summerville and we have a SA line that has been tweaked by SA for the lowcountry.. it's about $70 and a really good line. I have a few SLV reels and I love them to death. Copahee is a great place but they are not really tailing right now.. gonna try and find them somewhere else but usually the fall it is epic out there. Sounds like you have good rods. They will do ya fine. I'll PM you a couple spots you can try

Thanks for the response, a couple more questions. Do you prefer to fish from the yak or wade? Do you carry the SLV at the Charleston Angler?

yes and kind of... ;) Yes I fish form the yak but I do prefer to get out and wade. I have a tarpon 160os and I can't stand up in it, therefore I wade. If I had a ride or a native or a freedom hawk I would probably spend more time in the yak but for reds on the flats I like to wade. As for the SLV, no we do not stock the reel but I can special order it for you. If you'd like ot check one out I work at the s'ville store and will be there all day tomorrow and Saturday til about 2pm, sunday til about 1.
