Post Humminbird 385 ci kayak combo.
Has anyone used one, since it just been release? Plan on getting one. I was going to purchase the Black and white version at Bass pro for 399, but saw the ad for the 385ci depth and gps color combo for 450. So waiting for some reviews, and a good place to mount it on the Revolution, anyone have any suggestions?

When ever you are going to drill holes in your boat I say use the velcro method first... get some of that sticky back velcro, or even duct tape, and strap down what ever you are going to mount, look at where it is and answer these questions..

1. Can I reach it confortably?
2. Does it get in the way of anything, namely a fish online ;) ?
3. can I fish/paddle around it?
4. for FF.. can I see it clearly?
5. Can I reach it confortably?

It's so much easier to move velcro or get tape residue off a yak than trying to seal a hole. I have a basic humminbird mounted up front of my footwells. The transdcuer runs throught the hull and shoots out under my seat. This part of the yak is ALWAYS in contact with the water, and I use a Werker alarm system battery ( bought it in March of 2008 and it is STILL on the charge I bought it with  serioulsly...) I use it for looking at depth and if there is any structure or drop offs. I barely use it anymore but it is handy on new water... I haven't heard of any FF being bad for a yak... Unless you are chasing stripers and need to use it to actually find fish any FF you get that will tell you depth and show you what the bottom looks like will be fine...

Not familiar with that unit. You may want to ask on KayakBassFishing.com. About 1000 active members

if you're spending that kind of $$$, get a RAM mount too. It adds a ton of adjustability.

Hello -

I have the Humminbird 383c Portable unit on my Ocean Kayak and it works great. The 385 looks to be the next version of the 383. I really like the portable kit because the bag holds the fish finder and battery in a nice compact bag. The bag acts like a sun shield too which is a plus. Easy to setup when I want it, and nothing in the way when I don't need it.

My Ocean Kayak has a special scupper hole that fits the transducer (although not the transducer that came with the kit), so the whole installation was a snap. The only thing I needed to really do was come up with a simple way to anchor the bag to the yak. I am on a business trip now, but will post some photos when I get home later in the week if you are interested.

The 383 / 385 have loads of features - more than I'll ever need, but the screen is bright and easy to read, and the battery seems to last for a very long time. The features that I do use work flawlessly. I would definitely buy it again.

As I mentioned, the transducer that came with the kit was not the one that fit into my scupper, so I contacted Humminbird and they gladly exchanged it for the one I needed. That was mighty nice of them.

That unit is going to be my next addition...I have to get over drilling holes in Fiberglass first...
